Character

Name: Cecil Harvey
Fandom: Final Fantasy IV: The After Years
Gender: Male
Age: 37
Time Period: Before the final boss
Wing Color: Dark blue fading into white at the tips
History: Final Fantasy IV, The After Years, Cecil himself

Personality: Cecil is a very heroic character; a literal knight in shining armor, even. He’s always the first to charge against enemies and the last to retreat. He is a responsible king, devoted to his people and to world peace. He is also a caring friend, the kind who will worry about you even if he hasn’t seen you in nearly twenty years. He’d happily take a blow for anyone he cares about, especially friends and family.

However, he wasn’t always so upstanding. He was a Dark Knight in his youth, and he ended up attacking a peaceful village and razing another, killing most of its inhabitants. Even his numerous doubts about his duty weren’t quite enough to make him disobey his orders. But the discovery of a young girl named Rydia amongst the burning ruins sent him on a quest to redeem himself. And he sincerely cares about redeeming himself and staying redeemed. Thus he does his very best to be a fair, honest ruler and person, even when it might be disadvantageous to him. Should he make a mistake, he will shoulder the blame and do his best to repair it.

This came back to bite him when a mysterious girl attacked his castle and defeated him in combat. She brainwashed the unconscious Cecil, twisting his wish for peace and order with a desire to impose his view on the world. She forced him to attack his friends and lay the path for his planet’s destruction. Her hold over him ended up broken, but the damage had been done. Cecil, unable to deal with what he had been forced to do, became mostly catatonic. But even his state did not stop him from caring about others; though his powers were reduced, he still fought alongside his friends, and he found himself once more when his son and his brother were nearly killed by the incarnation of his darkness.

Strengths: Physically, Cecil is a very strong person; he makes climbing mountains in full plate armor look easy. He can take hits like no one else, and survive attacks that would fell a lesser man, a strength he uses to his group’s advantage with the ability Cover. He can also dance relatively well, which implies that he’s rather flexible and is naturally balanced.

Mentally, Cecil has received the education of a noble. We can therefore assume he is relatively knowledgeable in fields such as politics, economics and history. He spent many years as a soldier, and even more as a king; thus he can prioritize easily in various situations such as attacks on his kingdom. He is good with strategy and the intricacities of ruling a kingdom; at the very least, both his army and his people are quite happy with him.

Emotionally, he is a very stable, caring person. His younger self’s tendancy to angst has greatly diminished; upon returning to the light, he stops suffering from the acts he was forced to commit and concentrates on saving the world. He dearly loves his friends, and will think of them often if they are far away. He also cares for his brother, though their relation is somewhat strained.

Weaknesses: Cecil has a very low magic resistance, both in gameplay and in story. Golbez’s lightning bolts easily knock him down, and the Maenad is able to brainwash him after weakening him with Bahamut’s Megaflare. Also, while he possesses some white magic, his spells are weak and generally not very helpful.

Cecil also has a genetic weakness against mind control, which is a pretty bad thing to have when the big bads of both of your games use it. Then again, it did take a Megaflare to the face before the Maenad could turn him to her side... He is no scholar or genius, thus magical theory and other indepth subjects are beyond him.

Cecil represses many emotions, as shown when you fight the Dark Knight. He subconsciously resents his brother for abandoning him as a baby, and can show great cruelty when talking to him. Even as himself, he mentions being impressed that their uncle still thought enough of Golbez to save his life. He also reacts badly when Ceodore and Rosa side with someone else in a fight, though he normally shows no such jealousy. Finally, he cares so much for his loved ones that he would willingly give up a magical artifact to save them, even if it means dooming the world.

Samples (ALL samples must be set in Luceti-verse.)

First Person: Did... did we fail? Did that being somehow kill us all?

[The video post must accidental, because it shows a naked, pale male chest. It looks like someone is holding his journal against himself in a desperate attempt to ward off the cold.]

I cannot remember him attacking... Perhaps I hit my head? But would the afterlife not heal such wounds? [The sound of rustling hair.] No blood, and no swelling. Perhaps the wound can be healed, but the amnesia cannot? ...I suppose it matters not, in the end.

[His feet barely make any noise on the ground, but his body is obviously moving, even from such a close range.]

I should be thankful I appear to be the only one present at least. Perhaps Ceodore and the others have survived... As long as this crisis is averted, my death is an acceptable price to pay. But still, I’d hoped...

[But whatever he’d hoped, he does not say.]

...I should try to find my sword and shield. This afterlife might not be as pleasant as it appears to be.

Third Person: Cecil was starting to find the wings very, very troubling. Knowing that his life depended on those tiny feathery things certainly did not inspire much confidence. Leaving them out freely was an unacceptable risk; binding them, uncomfortable at best and painful at worst. All in all, they were an additional weakness in battle, and he knew too well that he already had too many of those.

From a purely aesthetical point of view, they were not too bad, he supposed. Having to modify all of his clothing was nothing but a small annoyance, though it did get worse if he wore many layers. And the wings themselves were pleasantly colored, though they were not particularly subtle. They matched his armor, at least. But still, when it came down to it the wings were one of this world’s main negative points.

Thus, visiting the smithy had been a perfectly natural decision. If there was a way to protect the wings, some sort of armor that could be attached to his back and not get in the way, professional blacksmiths who possessed wings themselves would certainly know about it. Perhaps they could even prepare a customized piece; while Cecil was quite aware that not everyone could afford such a luxury, he much prefered to wear armor that fit him perfectly. It made tragic accidents much less likely.

But as he approached the village square, he found himself walking toward the school instead. A small crowd had gathered there, shouting and screaming and sobbing until one could hear nothing but indistinct noise. Cecil felt a stab of dread somewhere deep within himself; what could make the crowd act in such a manner? Even death was become part of the local routine; it took a lot to unsettle the majority of the residents. Steeling himself mentally, he joined the group and looked upon the Malnosso’s latest ‘gift’.
