Those are dumb. When I learnt to write in Hyrule, we used charcoal - it's all smugdey and makes your fingers go black, but the ones who were really good used those. There's a plant which has black sap, like ink, and they used that.

Have you seen that plant in Luceti? It could be used as an independent, replenishing source of ink.

No, I haven't seen it at all. I think it's something that only grows in Hyrule, like Dekus.

Dekus? What sort of plant is it?

They're trees! They can be really big, really old trees and can talk to people, and there's also Deku scrubs that can move around. I turned into one during the last experiment. The Great Deku Tree looked after the forest.

Sentient trees that are not monsters? That they would look after the rest of the forest makes sense... Are they born Dekus, or do they become so with age?

Well, some of the scrubs attack people, but I think they're just scared easily. And born, I think... when the Great Deku Tree died, the Deku Sprout started growing right in front of it.

In other words, the forest is never left without a guardian? If the one that died was immediately replaced by its successor...

Not really... it took seven years for the Deku Sprout to grow. A little after the Great Deku Tree died, a man called Ganondorf took over. [His expression darkens a little.] The Deku Sprout only grew when I stopped the monster in the Forest Temple and awakened the Sage.

...It seems all the worlds have their own stories of attacks and invasions. Was the Sprout harmed, during those seven years?

[Good question.] I don't think so... it was underground. It was almost as big as me when it finally appeared, so I guess it was fine!

[His dignity... not so much.]

That does sound like a healthy sprout. Did it seem in high spirits?

Uh huh! It was really cheerful - the Great Deku Tree was always really serious. I guess that was because he was really old, huh?

Even the elderly can be high-spirited, but many of them do tend to be calmer and wiser.

Yeah... he wasn't grumpy or anything, but I guess he was really calm and wise.

He sounds like the sort of person you'd visit to receive advice and stories.

Uh huh. He taught us, and if people had problems, you could go to see him.

He was somewhat like everyone's grandfather, then?

[Hold on, trying to think of what a grandfather is.] Oh - yeah! He was sort of the father as well, though.

It seems as though he played many roles in your community.

Yeah... he just looked after all of us, I guess.

I hope the young sprout will be able to do the same for future generation.
