25th moon [written/action]

[Written

The message appears at midday, short and sweet.]

Would anyone like to ride an airship today?

[Action

Cecil cannot offer a real airship ride, of course. The Malnosso are not nearly that generous. But he's learned quite a few tricks with the Batlle Dome over the last two years, and he's now adding the last details to what he believes will be an adequate simulation. He has enough faith in it to share it with others at least, but the program still needs some final polishing.

Not that he minds. Better to work on that than to remind himself that he might be forty now.]

That's right. It's a good thing, too; our chief engineer managed to hide this whole airship in one of the secret chambers, to protect it from misuse. A smaller house would have made that impossible.

That's incredible. None of our buildings on Berk are that big.

That's a shame for the children who enjoy hide-and-seek. How tall can they be, in general?
dragoneer: (Oh yeah?)

All of our houses are only a story or two, but the great hall is pretty big. Tall and open with a huge, wide roof.

Large enough for great feasts and celebrations, then. That's an excellent quality for a hall.

[He starts to gently turn the ship to the right, as it slowly begins to move forward.]

[ Hiccup watches the landscape as the ship starts to turn. ]

How did you learn to do this?

[And off they go to the east, over the ocean!]

Which one, the piloting or the simulation?

Ah, that. When I was much younger I was selected to become the captain of Baron's airship fleet. Therefore, the engineers building them gave me piloting and maintenance lessons over a few months.

[If that look on his face is any indication, he remembers those very fondly.]

You learned how to pilot this thing in a few months?
paladinlost: (happy)

[personal profile] paladinlost 2013-04-18 05:12 pm (UTC)(link)
[He laughs a little.]

That was only for the piloting itself. To go anywhere safely, I needed many years' worth of geography lessons, too.
dragoneer: (We cool bro.)

Ah, right. I guess it wouldn't be very good if you didn't know if you were about to fly into a mountain range.

Or if I found myself missing an important meeting because I'd accidentally gone to a completely different city.
dragoneer: (Oh yeah?)

[personal profile] dragoneer 2013-04-21 01:31 am (UTC)(link)
That would be awkward.

[ And totally something Hiccup would be prone to do. ]

How high can this thing go?
paladinlost: (err)

action;

[personal profile] paladinlost 2013-04-21 07:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Higher than the highest mountain in the world, at the very least.

[...Which is admittedly not very precise.]

But I'm not certain how much higher it can go. Not nearly as far as the Lunar Whale, but that means very little.

Lunar...? Does that mean it can go into space?
paladinlost: (happy)

[personal profile] paladinlost 2013-04-25 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
That's exactly what it means. I'm hoping I'll be able to recreate it too, once this simulation is completely free of problems.
dragoneer: (I got this one)

[personal profile] dragoneer 2013-04-25 07:35 am (UTC)(link)
Whoa - really? [ That is TOO cool. ] Man, I'd love to see that one, too.

Someday, perhaps. I've no idea where it could go other than the moons, but it'd still be interesting to pilot again. The controls are completely different.
dragoneer: (Whelp.)

action;

[personal profile] dragoneer 2013-04-28 06:04 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd imagine. I mean - do you need a lot of magic to power it, too?
paladinlost: (lost in thought)

action;

[personal profile] paladinlost 2013-04-29 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
In a way. It's powered by powerful crystals, and while it must undoubtedly take a lot of magical energy we've never had to change them. For all we now they replenish themselves over time.
dragoneer: (Thinking critically!)

action;

[personal profile] dragoneer 2013-05-01 05:01 am (UTC)(link)
Is that what's powering this thing, too?
paladinlost: (happy)

[He shakes his head, though only slightly. He has to keep his eyes on their path, after all.]

The Enterprise has five engines, along with whatever power it can get from the wind. We've not yet learned how to use crystals in machinery.
