Should anyone be visiting the item shop in the morning or early afternoon, they'll be graced with the presence of a paladin! ...Which would normally be an extremely banal and commonplace event, but today said paladin happens to be a) turning the whole place upside down while looking for something, b) muttering some nasty curses that are directed at the items available in the shop, not at its patrons, promise, and c) wearing a long-sleeved turtleneck shirt over his mouth that happens to muffle most of point b). In the middle of July, if one must be reminded.

The journal message comes later during the day, weary-sounding and still slightly muffled by that turtleneck.]

Would anyone be kind enough to help me find a razor? My visit to the item shop was... very fruitless. I'd owe you a favor in return, of course.

Yes... it's fortunate that you have some family out there...

Though I do wish he'd visit even with no world-threatening dangers involved.

Perhaps one day. Although I understand the reason why he would keep his distance.

That does not mean that others agree.

Why should anyone want to be around someone who betrayed them? Who hurt them deeply?

Perhaps being apart hurt more than anything that was done. Perhaps a few unpleasant moments mean very little, in the long run.

I would have thought that having me around would be too much of a reminder of the terrible things I'd done...

Perhaps a little at first, but it would more likely have been a reminder to find more trainees for the dragoons.

It's not as if I deserve to fight among their ranks...

What does that say about all the recruits that look up to you, I wonder?

They'd look up to a traitor? One who's trying to atone, true, but that doesn't take back what happened...

They look up to one of Baron's greatest warriors, who fought terrible horrors on the moon and lived to tell the tale.

And they choose to ignore the darker parts of his story?

What is the worth of a single chapter, compared to a whole novel?

I always saw it as more of an overarching theme than one singular moment. It was always there in the background before it was acknowledged... and it was ever stronger after it appeared.

But is it encouraged? Fed with new darkness? How you react to it is also important.

I try to fight it, of course... but... that doesn't mean I'm always strong enough to overcome it.

No one is ever always strong enough. That's why teamwork is important.

In some cases, I would agree. [He's worked well enough within groups, both home and the war, but those were a different sort of battle, not something so intensely personal.] But I don't want to burden anyone with this.

That assumes that others would find it a burden.

I'm sure that they would.
