Should anyone be visiting the item shop in the morning or early afternoon, they'll be graced with the presence of a paladin! ...Which would normally be an extremely banal and commonplace event, but today said paladin happens to be a) turning the whole place upside down while looking for something, b) muttering some nasty curses that are directed at the items available in the shop, not at its patrons, promise, and c) wearing a long-sleeved turtleneck shirt over his mouth that happens to muffle most of point b). In the middle of July, if one must be reminded.

Some weeks, waking up is just not worth it.]

The journal message comes later during the day, weary-sounding and still slightly muffled by that turtleneck.]

Would anyone be kind enough to help me find a razor? My visit to the item shop was... very fruitless. I'd owe you a favor in return, of course.

Not a week. More like a few seconds. A minute, tops.

Definitely no inheritance. And none of 'em have said yes, obviously. I don't think any girl out there is as crazy as he is--not that he thinks it's crazy. He says it's love.

Is he aware that expressing love so quickly might frighten away potential partners?

You'd think he would be, right? After every single one of 'em turns him down?

That's why I say he's crazy. I hope the next girl he asks tunes him up--maybe then he'd learn to leave 'em alone.

It sounds very much as though a single woman telling him off would not make him consider changing his technique. Unless each and every single one of them refused gently?

...You're probably right. I don't think it matters how they turn him down--he's such an idiot that it wouldn't even stop him.

It was something of a step up from the seventeen years they'll spend spouseless and, in one case, extremely isolated in our world. Who would I have been to complain?

I know for a fact that they will. The problem is that I also know they'll not remember any of it.

They won't? Is that what happens when people go back?

People claim that is the case for everyone that goes home. That I cannot be certain of, but as someone who came from their future I know they'll not recall any of their time spent here.

[Oh man. He has promises to keep so his face falls when he hears that. He recovers quickly, though, and fakes a smile.]

Well, maybe they'll just get married again when they go back. There's worse things in life than havin' to sit through a wedding twice.

[He frowns in sympathy. Yeah, knowing that none of this will be remembered later is not what he'd call pleasant.]

And perhaps they'll remember to invite their friends as guests, next time.

No way, they forgot 'em? Even my friends didn't do that!

[And they're Mafia workaholics! One of whom didn't even know he was getting married until about a month before.]
