Should anyone be visiting the item shop in the morning or early afternoon, they'll be graced with the presence of a paladin! ...Which would normally be an extremely banal and commonplace event, but today said paladin happens to be a) turning the whole place upside down while looking for something, b) muttering some nasty curses that are directed at the items available in the shop, not at its patrons, promise, and c) wearing a long-sleeved turtleneck shirt over his mouth that happens to muffle most of point b). In the middle of July, if one must be reminded.

Some weeks, waking up is just not worth it.]

The journal message comes later during the day, weary-sounding and still slightly muffled by that turtleneck.]

Would anyone be kind enough to help me find a razor? My visit to the item shop was... very fruitless. I'd owe you a favor in return, of course.

I had to go through years of military training for that, and I lost the power the moment I became a paladin. Considering the side effects, I'd say it was an excellent trade.

Seems to me like that magic stuff isn't all that great if you can lose it just like that.

[At least when you train your body you'll always remember it.]

...That was something of a special case, one that was more a trade than a loss. People usually only forget their spells when they reached an age where they forget everything else.

Are there a lotta people who forget all their spells?

[He supposes it must be similar to aging and losing strength, but even then he knows some old men who fight very well.]

Not too many. It's mostly a problem for those who know many spells, and most mages limit themselves to a handful. Perhaps they become too much for their brains to hold.

[Constraints might be a better word than what Firo chose. If a body can learn almost limitless ways to lash out, then shouldn't spells be the same way?]

Learning magic is like learning any other subject, truly. Your own capacities are the limit.

Interesting. And do you get better at it the more you practice? Or is it just limited?

...It's both, really. By practicing and training I've learned new spells over time, but I'll still never match my wife's power or versatility. Potential and effort are both important.

[Firo nods and wonders if he should try saying something reassuring. It's not fun knowing your abilities are limited.]

It still seems amazing to me that you could do anything at all like magic--not you in particular, I mean, but anyone.

Your world has nothing resembling it, then? That's a shame. It makes travelling and dealing with monsters much easier.

[He starts putting order to a set of plates he'd left all over one of the shelves.]

Well... If we wanna travel we have trains and stuff like that. And we definitely don't have any monsters.

Your world has trains while mine has monsters? That's not a very fair trade. Though I did fight a monster train once...

One's definitely more convenient than the other.

A train that was also a monster, or a monster that happened to resemble a train. The exact details matter little, when it's attempting to kill you.

Er... But if it was a train, wouldn't it be stuck on its rails? They can't exactly chase you, unless you're dumb enough to walk on the tracks.

It was an undead train born from a shattered crystals. Rails mattered little to it, sadly.

But... But trains aren't even alive to begin with!

Have I said yet that your world's gotta be as weird as this place? Because now I'm sure it's true.

Really, now. My world does not capture the inhabitants of other lands and force wings upon their backs.

I once caught myself trying to match my clothes to their colors. Is that a sign I've been here too long?

In that case, I think it might be too late for you. They've already gotten to you too much!

Goodness. I suppose I have no choice but to accept this terrible state and fate, and remove all improperly colored items from my wardrobe.
