No good, they don't have... How does this even work? I'll stay away from it for now...

[Rummaging noises come from the journal, numerous but careful. It sounds like someone is exploring the item shop.]

I apologize for bothering everyone, but could anyone recommend objects that are helpful to a household? Specifically, objects that are necessary for a new arrival or that can keep the house organized and clean. I'm not familiar with most of the products I find here, and I'd rather not bring anything that is useless or dangerous home. I'd be most thankful for your help.

[He falls quiet, and for a few moments only the sounds of items being moved can be heard. It appears his message is over, but-]

Also, Ceodore. What blade are you currently using?

[With that, his post is truly over.]

I'm sure what little is there is barely deep enough for sailing.

The Malnosso do appear to care little for transportation. It would make sense for them to restrain the use of ships.

Or at least it would be consistent with their actions. But Jack Sparrow's boat should work well where a ship would be aground.

How did he obtain it? Is it beyond the mountains, or will it need to be transported there?

He built it himself. I think he's transporting it somehow. Something to do with a sea goddess.

...A sea goddess. Well, that somewhat makes sense. I've heard there are spirits here, so gods are not out of the question.

I doubt she is one, actually. In mythology she was a nymph, not a goddess. It's possible she's only deluded him into thinking she is one.

A nymph? Something between a spirit and a goddess, then?

More like a spirit, certainly.

Well, as long as she can move that boat, the details would matter little.

I suppose it must feel very different from staying on the shore, even during short journeys.

You've never been at sea?

Once, nearly two decades ago, and it ended badly. Since the creation of airships, Baron's navy has slowly been set aside.

Doesn't that leave you open to attacks by sea?
paladinlost: (calm)

[voice]

[personal profile] paladinlost 2011-03-23 03:49 am (UTC)(link)
Our airships have cannons that can aim at the sky and ground both. In theory, any naval attack would be intercepted from the safety of the skies.
simplestgift: (Whut?)

[voice]

[personal profile] simplestgift 2011-03-23 03:51 am (UTC)(link)
And the ships aren't equipped with the same cannons?
paladinlost: (mature)

[voice]

[personal profile] paladinlost 2011-03-23 03:57 am (UTC)(link)
No engineer has yet managed to build a cannon that can hit an airship from a normal ship. It might be possible in ten years, but not now. Thus, the airships are more versatile. We do keep a few sea vessels, but we've had no need to use them in years.

[personal profile] simplestgift 2011-03-23 04:07 am (UTC)(link)
I suppose with gravity working against you it might be a bit more difficult, but certainly not a feat of ten years. [He's already trying to work it out in his head.] How fast and maneuverable are the airships?
paladinlost: (flowy)

[voice]

[personal profile] paladinlost 2011-03-23 04:29 am (UTC)(link)
The Red Wings can go as fast as 55 knots and can turn 90° in less than two minutes at maximum speed, though their crew would be rather jostled. The Enterprise can move and turn faster, but it is too expensive to mass-produce.
simplestgift: (Thinking.)

[voice]

[personal profile] simplestgift 2011-03-23 04:37 am (UTC)(link)
Fast, then, but if you can angle the canons and compensate for the recoil, you could simply wait until the airship passed by overhead and give them a full broadside. The mathematics involved, of course...if you treat the air between them the same as you'd treat the open sea...
paladinlost: (frowning)

[voice]

[personal profile] paladinlost 2011-03-23 05:00 am (UTC)(link)
However, if the airship has already passed by overhead, it has also probably already attacked. Could it be done before that, or would it be more complicated?
simplestgift: (Far more uncertain)

[voice]

[personal profile] simplestgift 2011-03-23 05:08 am (UTC)(link)
That's why you wouldn't wait for it to pass. The moment it's in front of your first cannon, you'd begin the broadside. Same as at sea. The trouble is that cannonfire arches, it doesn't stay on a true trajectory. You would have to aim a little above your target, as always, and have quite a lot of power behind it.
paladinlost: (thoughtful)

[voice]

[personal profile] paladinlost 2011-03-23 05:12 am (UTC)(link)
I think the power needed was the main issue for our engineers. Cid could probably do something about it, but the airships are his pet project. Dragging him away from them is impossible.
simplestgift: (Concerned or thoughtful)

[voice]

[personal profile] simplestgift 2011-03-23 05:17 am (UTC)(link)
Additional gunpowder, strong cannons to withstand the pressure. It still leaves the problem of recoil. Still, I wouldn't think it would take ten years. Necessity alone usually provides.
