Should anyone be visiting the item shop in the morning or early afternoon, they'll be graced with the presence of a paladin! ...Which would normally be an extremely banal and commonplace event, but today said paladin happens to be a) turning the whole place upside down while looking for something, b) muttering some nasty curses that are directed at the items available in the shop, not at its patrons, promise, and c) wearing a long-sleeved turtleneck shirt over his mouth that happens to muffle most of point b). In the middle of July, if one must be reminded.

Some weeks, waking up is just not worth it.]

The journal message comes later during the day, weary-sounding and still slightly muffled by that turtleneck.]

Would anyone be kind enough to help me find a razor? My visit to the item shop was... very fruitless. I'd owe you a favor in return, of course.

[He whips around to fully face Cecil, too surprised to think about hiding it. He didn't think it could get that bad.]

Perhaps not all of them, but some certainly were, according to the people who were present back then. I have to wonder what exactly made it an undesired outcome, this time.

[He shakes his head and turns back to rummaging through the items. He's too busy puzzling over this new information to really give anything a good look, though.]

That's crazy. Who knows if we'll get lucky the next time they do that?

Possibly, but I'd not bet on it. It sometimes feels like it's always when we feel the most secure that the bad experiments hit us.

[He sets a flowery lampshade aside and move on to the next item.]

Yeah, you can say that again. Things'll be calm for a while, and then right when you're about to fall asleep, it all blows up.

[He shakes his head, smiling ruefully.]

I never thought I'd miss this about home, but at least somethin' was almost always happenin' there. It's better than goin' back and forth; you're already on your toes.

Would that not become extremely stressful over time? Not that dealing with attempts to destroy the world every few decades is any better, but still...

[At least during those decades he has nothing worse to worry about than isolated monster attacks.]

Oh, we'll stop it. We always do. But it does make one wonder if our grandchildren will someday have to deal with the same problems all over again.

Who keeps tryin' to mess it up? Even if you can stop 'em, that sounds pretty annoying.

Lunarians long sealed away, and... some sort of otherworldly being; I was taken here before I could find out what exactly it was. But their actions were nothing we could predict, sadly.

Exactly like that, yes. That's a very common opinion, for some reason.

I'm not surprised. In my world, there's only life on the moon if you believe that told prank a newspaper pulled ages ago. And it's definitely not comin' down and attackin' us.

To be perfect truthful, we'd have thought the same over twenty years ago. Or during those seventeen years where we only had one moon.

How do you not notice if you have more than one moon? They're kinda big. And bright.

We always knew we had two. It's just that one of them left, and another appeared recently.

[He sighs, running a hand through his hair. This only gets more difficult to believe.]

Yeah, okay. I'm sure there's an explanation for that...

It was artificial, created by the Lunarians to host the remains of their civilization. I imagine their blueprints included engines and the means to use.

[...Or it was magic. Cecil doesn't know either.]

Engines, sure. Why wouldn't a moon have engines?

[Another shake of his head.]

I think you could blow H.P. Lovecraft outta the water for weirdest story ever made.

Did your Lovecraft ever have to deal with genocidal sealed Lunarians, too? That part was strangest by far.

[Though it wasn't nearly as strange as the decorative plate he just set aside.]

Sealed..? What does that even mean?

In theory, he was supposed to be kept asleep and unable to contact others who could advance his plans. In practice, that's never stopped particularly murderous people.

I'm really not jealous of what you hafta put up with back home.

I'd never call it pleasant, but from what I hear it's also far from the worst situation people have known. That's more than a little alarming.

[He nods as he thinks that over. There is one world he's heard of that beats all the others for being plain terrible.]

Yeah, "alarming" is what it is. I've heard of...one worse. Not as much hassle as yours, I think, but more like most things about daily life just sucked.

[That could describe life in his old neighborhood, too, but even that wasn't as bad.]
