Yes. Air pollution and water pollution are the worst.

Some kinds of pollution are more annoying than harmful, though. Like light and noise pollution.

...You can pollute with light and noise? How?

Imagine light filling the sky, until you can't see the stars. And sound both constant and loud. They're common problems, especially in big cities; both are irritating, but neither is truly harmful.

...That sounds more terrifying than annoying, if you ask me.

It's a constant thing, and yes it can be overwhelming if you're not used to it. But the places these things happen are home of hundreds of thousands of people, so I assume one can adapt to it.

I can hardly imagine living in a world where stars exist, but are always beyond our sight.

Not always. You can usually see some, no matter where you are. And far away from cities, you can see thousands at a time.

That's good for most people, though it's a shame for city-dwellers.

In my experience, most city dwellers are too distracted to look up and realize what they're missing.

Probably a little of both. Cities have all sorts of people.

...That means that some of them must still care for the skies, surely.

They usually take vacations. Visit places in the countryside, where you can see the stars.

...The problem, of course, is that the jobs are in the cities.

That makes sense. People are needed where people live in the first place, and not everyone is made for the life of a farmer.

That's how it works. Though farming is easier than ever in my time, so there's even less of a demand.

...Which would send the surplus of potential farmers to the city.

Of course, there aren't enough jobs, even there, so some people are unemployed. But the government helps out; Where I live, even medical care is covered.

Is there no army that could take in a portion of the unemployed population?

There is, but most people don't want to be in the army. Many don't qualify, either.

I can understand that, but it'd still be better than starving.

Starving is not a problem for most people. The government helps people, and many can find work again. The problem is that many of the people who can't find a job aren't qualified for one, even n the military.

Is there no way for them to take up apprenticeships, at least?

Not that I know of? For some jobs, maybe, but not many, and there's not much demand.

That's a shame. It's how most of my people find work, unless they take up family trades.

Does it work with Vista?

Idk. ... I really, REALLY hate Vista.

It took a while, but I'm used to it now.

You can get used to anything. At least Vista is better than ME.
